Metadata for describing collection of periodicals

The article is dedicated to the problem of developing metadata for the collection of periodicals of 19th - early 20th centuries, maintained by the Scientific library of Kazan State University (KSU SL) with support of the Russian Humanitarian Scientific Foundation (project N 04-01-12032b).

Collection of local periodicals maintained by KSU SL is one of the most complete ones and comprises almost all newspapers that were issued in Kazan in the 19th century, including censorial newspaper copies with first censures of works by Maxim Gorkiy, V.Korolenko, N.Garin-Mikhailovsky and others. The collection has been actively used in research. This caused deterioration of a part of collection, which was stopped being given to the readers. Natural ageing and destruction of paper adds to that. Thus, there is a real danger of losing a part of the collection, which represents a historic source of national and international relevance.

In view of the above, creating collection of e-documents on the basis of the collection of local periodicals of the 19th – early 20th centuries is a priority task in the process of developing e-library of the Kazan State University.
